Biscayne National Park & Biscayne Beach Cleanup Win Award

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Biscayne National Park’s Biscayne Beach Cleanup (BBC) volunteer program received the George and Helen Hartzog Innovation Award for Exceptional Volunteer Service. This award honors unique initiatives that creatively fulfill park needs through volunteerism.

Amid the pandemic, traditional volunteer sources for the Bisbayne Beach Cleanup were disrupted, leading to shoreline debris buildup. Adapting creatively, program managers targeted South Florida locals, resulting in a successful volunteer recruitment model.

The 2021-2022 season saw 275 volunteers collect 30,000 pounds of marine debris, a record since 2004. The award was accepted by volunteer Ana Zangroniz during a national ceremony in Washington, DC.

The program collaborates with local organizations and partners like Miami Dade College, Florida International University, and others. Financial support comes from Florida’s National Parks Alliance, Coastal Cleanup Corporation, and Florida National Parks Association.

BBC holds cleanups from December to April, welcoming visitors and locals over 16. The strenuous work provides boat transport and tools. For more info, visit volunteer.gov or email them.
