The news story is based on a press release from the National Park Service, which was issued on June 29, 2023. You can read the original release here. Visitors to the park and residents near Otter Creek, Roanoke, Linville Falls, and Asheville should anticipate minor delays as maintenance work progresses in these areas. In the coming weeks, a bridge maintenance project will focus on six bridges located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, spanning both Virginia and North Carolina. The project aims to replace bearings, joints, and address minor concrete repairs. As the work takes place, travelers on the Parkway can expect single-lane traffic control during the daytime, and in some cases, there may be complete evening closures with brief detours at specific locations:
- Milepost 61.4, which crosses over VA Route 130 at Otter Creek
- Milepost 121.4, which crosses over 220 in Roanoke
- Milepost 316.5, where two bridges along the Linville Spur Road will be affected
- Milepost 388.1 and 388.8, located at US Route 25
The project is scheduled to be completed at all locations by September 2023. One of the most notable features of the Blue Ridge Parkway is its remarkable collection of over 170 bridges. As one of the country’s largest designed landscapes, the Parkway offers visitors a diverse range of opportunities to immerse themselves in the natural beauty, history, and culture of the southern Appalachian region.
Several road projects are currently underway throughout the Parkway, and it is important for both park visitors and local residents to exercise caution and respect any closures in place. The Parkway’s website and road status page serve as valuable resources for planning, providing daily updates on the status of each milepost, along with links to additional project information and detour maps, if applicable.
