A Little More About the National Park Junior Ranger Program

The U.S. National Park Service Junior Ranger program offers young visitors the opportunity to explore, learn, and protect national parks. Geared towards children ages 5 to 13, the program aims to inspire a love of nature and history through engaging activities and experiences.

To become a Junior Ranger, participants typically pick up a Junior Ranger booklet at a participating national park visitor center. The booklet contains various activities, such as educational games, puzzles, and challenges, that encourage kids to learn about the park’s natural and cultural resources. Activities may include identifying plants and animals, completing educational worksheets, attending ranger-led programs, or participating in guided tours.

After completing the activities, Junior Rangers return their booklets to a park ranger for review. Once the ranger verifies that the tasks have been completed, the child is sworn in as a Junior Ranger and receives an official Junior Ranger badge or patch and a certificate of achievement.

The Junior Ranger program helps children develop a deeper appreciation for national parks and the environment, as well as a sense of responsibility for preserving these special places. It also encourages families to explore and enjoy the outdoors together, fostering a lifelong connection to nature and history.
